On June 5, 1997, Inter Milan whisked Ronaldo away for 4 billion pesetas. The strange thing was, Barcelona never actually sold him. The money was deposited directly into the account of the Liga de F\u00fatbol Profesional under Ronaldo\u2019s own name. Barcelona’s consent was not required. Nor was their signature. Because by then, the legal right to sell Ronaldo no longer rested in Barcelona\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to 1985, clubs in Spain enjoyed a peculiar, feudal prerogative known as derecho de retenci\u00f3n<\/em>\u2014the right of retention. Even after a contract expired, a club could unilaterally renew it by offering a marginal wage increase. The player\u2019s consent was irrelevant. As a result, a footballer could find himself bound to a single club against his will for the entirety of his career, for as long as the club saw fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 26, 1985, the Spanish government enacted Real Decreto 1006<\/em>, a dedicated statute regulating the employment relationships of professional athletes. Article 13 of that decree abolished the right of retention forever. It established that a player could terminate his contract of his own free will. No justification had to be shown; no club permission was required. And Article 16 stipulated that upon such unilateral departure, the club was entitled to compensation\u2014and if the two parties had not agreed upon that compensation beforehand, the figure would be determined by a labor tribunal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No club wanted a court of law to set the market price of its prize asset. So clubs began inscribing the exact figure into the contract itself. It came to be known as the cl\u00e1usula de rescisi\u00f3n<\/em>\u2014the buyout clause. In Spain, every player’s contract bears a release clause; clubs cannot omit it even if they wish, for it is a statutory obligation. Only the valuation is determined by the club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the mechanism of payment was even more peculiar. In England, club pays club. In Spain, the player pays it himself. The acquiring club advances the funds to the player; the player deposits the sum with the league authorities to liberate himself from his contract; only then does the league disburse the money to his former club. On paper, Inter never purchased Ronaldo. Ronaldo bought his own freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was a trap in this mechanism that no longer exists today. Until 2016, the Spanish tax authority treated that upfront advance as taxable personal income for the player. That meant the buying club had to fund the entire buyout clause, and then pay up to 50 percent personal income tax on top of that sum. In practice, the cost almost doubled. Ronaldo\u2019s agent, Giovanni Branchini, later remarked that the clause was a novelty in those days, and struck fear into many prospective suitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now to the numbers. In July 1996, Barcelona paid PSV Eindhoven roughly 1.5 billion pesetas. All told, the expenditure touched nearly twenty million dollars\u2014a world record at the time. The boy was barely nineteen years old, fresh off a scintillating season in the Dutch Eredivisie accompanied by a dubious knee injury. In that very contract, his release clause was set at 4 billion pesetas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July 1996, 4 billion pesetas was an astronomical sum. No club on earth had ever spent anything close to that on a single footballer. Barcelona’s calculation was simple: set the bar so high that no hand could ever reach it. Then ten months slipped by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

47 goals in 49 appearances. 34 goals in 37 league matches\u2014a club record that stood unbroken until Lionel Messi shattered it in 2009\u201310. Four hat-tricks. That October goal against Compostela, starting from inside his own half and slaloming past four defenders, remains one of the most celebrated goals in football history. In Rotterdam, against PSG in the European Cup Winners’ Cup final: a 37th-minute penalty, 1\u20130, trophy. The Copa del Rey, the Supercopa de Espa\u00f1a. The Pichichi, the European Golden Shoe, and the youngest ever recipient of the FIFA World Player of the Year award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The buyout clause had been set at a time when Barcelona knew very little of what Ronaldo would truly become. On the very day he signed, they had fixed the maximum price anyone would ever have to pay to wrest him away. That figure had been inked in July 1996, when Ronaldo was merely a nineteen-year-old youth who had not played a single minute in a Barcelona shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet over the ensuing ten months, Ronaldo produced a campaign that fundamentally upended Barcelona\u2019s arithmetic. The 4 billion pesetas that had seemed impossible in July suddenly looked like a realistic bargain by May. And yet, the figure in the contract remained unchanged. Barcelona suddenly woke up to a harrowing realization: the very number they had conceived as an impenetrable cage was precisely what held the exit door wide open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just two months into the season, Barcelona offered to tear up the existing contract and double his salary. On November 6, President Josep Llu\u00eds N\u00fa\u00f1ez reached a verbal agreement with Ronaldo\u2019s agents, with ink expected before the close of February. February arrived and passed. A new deadline was pushed to May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every week, Ronaldo scored goals. And every week, his agents\u2019 leverage strengthened. The new contract remained unsigned. Which meant that the 4-billion clause drafted in July 1996 remained valid all through the campaign. Branchini later stated plainly that they negotiated day after day with Barcelona\u2019s lawyers and Vice President Joan Gaspart, and the one thing Barcelona failed to grasp was the gravity of that release clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two competing narratives surround that impasse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

N\u00fa\u00f1ez\u2019s version tells a story of endless obstinacy. He claimed that from the start, Ronaldo\u2019s agents made negotiations impossible. No sooner was one term agreed upon than a fresh demand would materialize. Resolve five issues, and a sixth would appear; resolve the sixth, and a seventh was put forward. In this manner, negotiations dragged endlessly. Until finally, one day, Ronaldo himself arrived in tears before N\u00fa\u00f1ez, confessing that his advisers had received a vastly superior offer elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ronaldo\u2019s account was entirely different. He maintained that toward the conclusion of the talks, an agreement had indeed been struck. Barcelona had even called to confirm that the deal was done and everyone was pleased. But three days later, another call arrived. This time, he was informed that the club’s lawyers and president had reviewed the contract afresh and decided the terms were unacceptable. If Ronaldo wished, he was free to leave for any club willing to pay his full release clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 29, Ronaldo announced that he would not play for Barcelona again. Exactly one week later, on June 5, Inter deposited the release fee with the league authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debate still lingers over who spoke the truth in those final hours. Whether N\u00fa\u00f1ez\u2019s version holds water or Ronaldo\u2019s may never be definitively known. Yet one thing is beyond dispute\u2014and for understanding what ultimately transpired, this debate hardly matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because Barcelona’s ability to retain Ronaldo had essentially expired back in July 1996, the very day the ink dried on that contract. They failed to realize then that 4 billion pesetas was not a guarantee of keeping Ronaldo, but the price tag on his departure. Arriving in May 1997, they only realized that the condition written with their own hands was no longer on their side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the tenth mandala of the Rigveda, there is a dialogue between Urvashi and Pururavas. In the Shatapatha Brahmana, that tale unfolds in greater detail. Urvashi agreed to live with King Pururavas upon strict conditions, fixed from the very outset: no harm must come to the two rams tethered beside her bed, and Pururavas must never appear unclothed before her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a time, under cover of darkness, the Gandharvas stole away the two rams. Pururavas bolted from the bed to rescue them, and at that very instant, lightning rent the sky. In that sudden flash of illumination, Urvashi\u2019s gaze fell upon Pururavas\u2019s bare body. The pact was shattered. Urvashi did not linger for another moment; she vanished. The Gandharvas had longed to reclaim Urvashi, but they had needed no new conditions to do so. They had merely activated one of the clauses established at the very beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ronaldo\u2019s story mirrors that ancient myth. Barcelona made no radical new choice. They lost Ronaldo because of the very covenant they had signed a year earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inter had kept Ronaldo in their sights long before that summer. Their scouts had watched him since his days in Brazil\u2019s youth squads. Later, Inter President Massimo Moratti recounted a story from that era: sitting in the back of a taxi on a spring afternoon, watching the Brazilian play out a goalless match against Fiorentina. Before the final whistle sounded, his mind was made up: he had to bring this boy to Inter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside the main negotiations, Nike also sought a hand in the affair. The Brazilian national team was in France, and Nike proposed sending a representative there to meet with Ronaldo, seeking to broker an accord between Barcelona and their star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The matter grew even more entangled for another reason: at that exact moment, Nike was negotiating a kit sponsorship deal with Barcelona\u2014a proposed ten-year pact worth nearly 18 billion pesetas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet N\u00fa\u00f1ez refused to entertain the idea. He made it abundantly clear: Nike could manufacture Barcelona\u2019s jerseys, but they would have no say in the contract negotiations with Ronaldo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Branchini held a slim folder in his hands. Three names: Inter, Lazio, Glasgow Rangers. Rangers’ proposal was the most eccentric of all: they offered that Ronaldo would not have to play Saturday league fixtures in Scotland\u2014he would only need to turn out under the floodlights of European nights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barcelona did not submit quietly. They lodged a formal complaint against Inter with FIFA in Zurich. The case was referred to an arbitration committee. By then, the fundamental question was no longer whether Ronaldo could join Inter; his exit from Barcelona was an accomplished fact. The real question was how much compensation Inter owed Barcelona. In the end, the committee ruled in Barcelona\u2019s favor, ordering Inter to pay an additional 400 million pesetas over and above the mandatory 4 billion buyout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The saga was hardly a novel experience for N\u00fa\u00f1ez. Elected president by the socios in 1978, he steered the club for twenty-two unbroken years. The decision to sell Diego Maradona to Napoli in 1984 had also occurred under his watch. N\u00fa\u00f1ez had always insisted that Barcelona players could not merely perform on the pitch; they had to project a spotless public image worthy of the institution. Players who courted controversy or clashed with the club found little favor with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curiously, Maradona criticized N\u00fa\u00f1ez many times in later years. N\u00fa\u00f1ez had his own rebuttal: he could never comprehend how a player could secure a lucrative contract elsewhere, walk away from the club, and then blame the president for his own departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once Ronaldo left, N\u00fa\u00f1ez moved swiftly to reassemble the side. He replaced Bobby Robson with Louis van Gaal, brought in Rivaldo from Deportivo La Coru\u00f1a, and signed Sonny Anderson from Monaco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barcelona went on to capture consecutive La Liga titles in 1997\u201398 and 1998\u201399. Viewed solely through the lens of losing Ronaldo, the story reads like a heartbreak. But examine the ledger, and the picture shifts. Barcelona bought Ronaldo for roughly 1.5 billion pesetas and released him a year later for 4.4 billion\u2014collecting two league trophies along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contract containing that fateful 4-billion release clause had been signed in July 1996, in a hotel room in Miami. The Brazilian squad was preparing for the Atlanta Olympics there. PSV was dragging its heels at the eleventh hour, and with the aid of the Brazilian Football Confederation, attempts were made to keep Barcelona officials away from the player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two security guards stood watch before Ronaldo\u2019s hotel room door. There was no direct route inside. So Barcelona Vice President Joan Gaspart devised an audacious subterfuge. Borrowing a waiter\u2019s uniform from a Spanish hotel worker, he hoisted a serving tray with a single glass of Coca-Cola upon it. He told the guards that the guest inside had requested a refreshment. The guards stepped aside. Gaspart knocked. Ronaldo opened the door himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moments later, perched on the edge of the bed in that hotel room, Ronaldo signed the contract. Inscribed across the parchment was the 4-billion-peseta buyout clause. At the time, that figure may have looked like an insurmountable summit.
